Humans play animals actors playing humans in a series of miniature sets, a play and ongoing rehearsals that explore the political impact of fiction.

The project follows the making of a theatrical play performed on a miniature stage by animal-actors with human personalities, then interpreted during collective workshops, called 'rehearsals'. A final performance was staged on 22 June 2023 (Lab-1, Eindhoven, NL), featuring the five animals, the director and his assistant, the cameraman and the scripter.

The characters engaged in a lively political debate, on questions of power, rebellion, and fighting strategies against the humans destroying the planet.

By blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality, humans and non-humans, The Butcher complicates the separation of beings and the stereotypes associated with them. It thus explores fiction's capacity to imagine new relation to the world around us, and questions our interconnection to other living beings.

It is also a project in which about thirty people got involved, making community around a vast metafiction. I asked artist to write fictional critiques of the play, to act in an interview of the actors, to perform the characters during workshops-rehearsals, and to build set-ups.

All the project has been gathered in a publication, printed with the help of the Experiment Community Grant of the Design Academy Eindhoven.

Des humains jouent le rôle d’animaux-acteurs jouant des humains dans une série de scènes miniatures, une pièce de théâtre et des répétitions improvisées, afin d’explorer l’impact politique de la fiction.

Le projet suit la création d’une pièce de théâtre jouée sur des scènes miniatures par des animaux anthropomorphes, puis interprétée lors d’ateliers collectifs appelés rehearsals. Une représentation finale a été joué sur scène le 22 Juin 2023 (Lab‑1, Eindhoven, NL), faisant apparaître en public les cinq animaux, le directeur et son assistante, le caméraman et le script.

Les personnages sont pris en plein débat sur des questions de pouvoir et de révolte, et des stratégies pour faire face aux humains qui détruisent la planète.

En brouillant les frontières entre fiction et réalité, humains et non-humains, The Butcher complique la séparation des êtres et les stéréotypes qui y sont associés. Il explore ainsi la capacité de la fiction à imaginer d’autres rapports au monde, et interroge nos relations aux autres êtres vivants.

C’est aussi un projet dans lequel une trentaine de personne se sont impliqué·es, faisant communauté autour d’une vaste métafiction. J’ai proposé à des artistes d’écrire des critiques fictives de la pièce, de jouer pour une interview des acteurs, de jouer les personnages lors d’atelier-théâtre et de construire des décors.

L’ensemble du projet est regroupé dans une publication, imprimée avec l’aide de la bourse Experiment Community Grant of the Design Academy Eindhoven.
